New Officer Installation

From RedneckRosarian:

Each year we install new officers at our society without much fanfare. I think its important that everyone knows who our new officers are for the coming year and to recognize each office and its unique role within the society. I would love to hear from others on how they conduct officer installation ceremonies within their societies. Any tips and ideas would be helpful. Thanks.

Hi Chris– I have attended semi-formal dinner banquets for the installation of officers. I’ve also attended casual gathering for the installation of officers. I like something my parents told me 50 years ago when I was going to my senior prom: “You are dressed up. Now act the part.” To me, being a rose society officer is a big deal. I love being a member of the American Rose Society. When I was elected vice president of the Rainy Rose Society, it didn’t seem like a big deal. However, when I learned that in 7 months, I would become president of this wonderful society, I realized it WAS a big deal. I think the more we make transition of officers memorable, the more all of our members will feel that being an officer in a rose society is important. If you’re calling for a vote, I vote to have the occasion be as prestigious as possible without causing a financial hardship on any of your members. Take lots of photos! Put them in the next issue of your newsletter. Invite guests from neighboring rose societies. We don’t all ever have the opportunity to be president of anything, so let it be the important celebration that it is! Sue Tiffany

We have a script one of our members put together, and we make all the officers stand together at the front of the room, and go through the offices one by one, with a description of the duties and make each officer solemnly swear to uphold the duties of the office to the best of their ability – sounds like a wedding, frankly, and there’s always lots of embarrassed giggling going on – and each officer is handed a rose as they complete their swearing in. Florist roses, or one year silk roses, I still have that one.
