I need help with programs for our society’s monthly meeting.

Hi Joan,

Something I didn’t learn until I was no longer my rose society’s president is that most districts have a list of speakers on their website! I don’t know what district you are in, but I’m wondering if perhaps your district has a speaker’s bureau? In the Pacific Northwest, ours are listed by the areas the speakers prefer to address.

That being said, I can list the programs Rainy has had in the last two years. 1) Power Point presentions:the Roses of Italy; 2) one or two programs on soil–one on making compost and another on what really is an organic soil; 3) A big favorite was “Building Your Own Watering System”– our speaker put everything together right in front of our eyes! 4) Participating in the Changing World of Roses– this included preserving all types of roses and advocating for the rose; 5) Bring your favorite tool to the meeting and share why. One society actually makes a competition of this and an award goes to what the group decides is the best all-around tool! 6) Our Micro-Climates in the Pacific Northwest (substitute your society) and what makes a micro-climate. I’m planning to have this article in the February issue of Rain Drops. It was one of the best meetings ever! 7) Growing Organically. 8) Integrated Pest Management. 9) Grooming roses for a display. 9) Arranging roses for gifting. 10) Photos of the new roses being introduced in a particular year. 11) Book signing by Jeff Wyckoff (high attendance!). 12) Growing roses from cuttings. 13) Disease control. 14) Pruning demonstrations where roses in containers were brought in, one was demonstrated and then the pruners were put in the hands of members. 15) Bugs in your garden– they are not all bad. 16) How to take good photographs of your rose. 17) Sustainable landscaping and landscaping with roses (this will be our program this coming March). 17) Growing roses in containers.

We also do year-end “How did your garden grow.” And, we ask our members what speakers they would like to hear. We had Dr. Gary Ritchie talk about photosynthesis and how roses freeze.

These are some ideas. I hope they will help.

Sue

Joan. We had several good programs last year. You can follow the link to our webpage where our programs are described. http://www.rosesocietyjoco.org/events_club.htm. You may also want to look at other society webpages. Also, on the ARS website in the members area, there is a list of local societies by district. Some have links to the local society websites which may include their calendar of events. It is somewhat hit-and-miss because not all societies have webpages and not all include a list of program, but I found a few that did.John

Hi Joan– I don’t know why I didn’t think of this! You can order fully packaged Power Point presentations. I’ve never done it, but I know other societies who have done this. One even brings popcorn to the meeting. Go to http://www.ars.org. Click on Members Only. Scroll down to Power Point Presentations. (Somewhere, you may have to enter the monthly password.) There are so many there! Just pick a topic. Chemical Safety, Integrated Pest Management, Old Garden Roses… the list is long. I just downloaded one on Old Garden Roses in about 30 seconds. The information is solid and the color photos are awesome. I hope this helps! Sue
