Looking for a soft pink, vigorous climber that blooms freely throughout the summer? Look no further! Awakening may be just the rose for you.
This superb, pale pink, large-flowered climber was introduced in 1992. It is a sport of New Dawn, the very popular pink climber grown throughout the South. The flowers are fully double, about three inches in diameter, and composed of 26-40 tiny petals. The fragrant blooms will often quarter in the fashion of an old-garden rose, adding to their appeal. Awakening will easily cover an arbor, as it rapidly grows to a height of 10-15 feet. The thorns are large and hooked, making it a formidable rose to handle without a good pair of goatskin gloves! The canes are covered with dark green, shiny foliage, creating an attractive display against any backdrop. It happily grows on its own roots and is not fussy about soil types as long as plenty of sunlight is available.
Awakening was discovered in Czecho-slovakia and brought to England by D. Balfour, where it was then introduced by Peter Beales Roses.
Awakening may be purchased at many vendors, including Roses Unlimited in Laurens, SC (864 682-7673) and Sequoia Nursery in Visalia, CA (559 732-0309).
