Blanc Double de Coubert
February 2006

Blanc Double de Coubert

This is one of the best white-blooming roses. The easily 3” diameter semi-double flowers are pure white, sometimes tinged with blush in the bud. The petals have an almost papery appearance and can fade rapidly when exposed to rainy weather. The extremely fragrant blossoms appear in profusion in early summer and then repeat until frost. The rose generally sets very few hips. Dead-heading will encourage repeat bloom. The plant is clothed with typical rugosa foliage being leathery, wrinkled, and dark green. Large, orange-red hips follow blooms.

This rose attains a height of up to 5' tall and 4' wide in my New York climate. It can be grown by itself, mixed in with perennials or other shrubs, or as a hedge. This Hybrid Rugosa shrub was introduced in 1892 in France by Cochet-Cochet who claimed that it was the result of a cross between 'R. rugosa' and the beautiful tea rose ‘Sombreuil'.

Rose of the month February 2006 - Blanc Double de Coubert

'Blanc Double de Coubert' has very healthy rugosa type foliage and is completely winter hardy with no protection to Zone 3 and is disease free.

In winter the shrub loses all leaves and the bark turns papery grey - looking dead. However, Spring will bring multiple buds to life and crinkled leaves soon follow to clothe the stark stems and ready the bush for wonderful, fragrant blooms.

Easy to grow and wonderful to have in any garden.
