Typography/Special Marks used in the Handbook for Selecting Roses

The typical entry in these lists has a number of important informational features to guide the buyer in choosing the right variety:

Name of the Rose: Names shown in bold typeface are the Approved Exhibition Names (AEN) under which the rose must be entered in ARS Rose Shows.
Classification or Type: This label or designation indicates the type of rose based on registration of the variety by the hybridizer or introducer. Currently, 37 classes of roses are recognized by the American Rose Society.

Color: Roses also receive a descriptive color class by using one of 18 defined colors as established by the American Rose Society.

Petal Count: The number of petals is a measure of the fullness of a flower. Roses range from the simplicity of five petals up to 100+. Single = 4-8; semi-double = 9-16; double = 17-25 petals; full = 26-40; very full = 41+.

Year of Introduction: This shows the year of registration, or the introductory date if the variety was not registered. This information should help the reader to determine how long this variety has been in commerce.

National RIR Score: The average garden performance rating for the variety as determined in the national survey. Some roses have not been reviewed in the past ten years. An asterisk (*) by the score indicates the score may be out of date.
